A bit about Jacob

I'm a History teacher with 15 years of classroom experience. I graduated in History and Arabic from the University of St Andrews and have a PGCE with Distinction in History from Oxford University. My History lessons encourage students to develop a love of the past and a critical approach to the world around them. I have extensive resources drawn from over 15 years of experience teaching History at KS3, GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and for the International Baccalaureate. From the rise of the Mongols to the fall of the Berlin Wall, I am ready to help you foster a deep, lasting interest in the past and to make you even more interested in this fascinating subject. Critical thinking is at the heart of each of my lessons. History is a subject that fosters literacy skills in the reading and analysis of source material. As such, a wide range of reading material will be handpicked to challenge your individual need. Writing skills will also be a focus as we seek to develop your ability to evaluate and explain an argument on paper. My lessons are usually 40 mins for KS3 or 60 mins for GCSE/IGCSE and above. A-level/IB lessons can be longer as required, up to 90 mins. My passion for History stems from learning about the Crusades and the Medieval Middle East as a young student. I was drawn to the motivations of the people who lived at this time, particularly their religious beliefs and the role that religion played in Medieval Christian and Islamic societies. After school I travelled around the Middle East, visiting historical sites in Syria and Jordan, and began to learn Arabic. I carried this on at university, completing a MA in History and Arabic at the University of St Andrews. After two years teaching History at an Ismaili school in Kenya, I returned to the UK to complete a PGCE with distinction at Oxford University. I have now taught in the state and private sectors in the UK for 15 years. Most recently, I have been teaching History at one of the country's leading boarding schools. During this time I have continued my love of travel and have sought to make History more engaging for my students by creating and editing videos about historical sites around the world. These are posted on my YouTube channel 'Mr Keet on Location'. In addition, I write and present long-form historical biographies for the 'People Profiles' and 'People Profiles Extra' on YouTube. Alongside my work on YouTube, I have produced a textbook on the Korean War with leading textbook author Ben Walsh for the Historical Association. I am also a keen Violinist, giving concerts in the local area as a soloist and orchestral player.
