A bit about Steve N

Qualifications: I graduated in (Human) Geography then completed a Masters in Equal Opportunities in Education - both in Manchester. More recently I've completed a CELTA (Certificate for Teaching English). Experience: it is close to 30 years now in various educational settings & capacities - Universities, Schools in the UK, International Schools in Spain, Academies & in companies. In the last year I've successfully transitioned to teaching & tutoring online alongside developing course materials for all age groups - including International Business Students at the University of Toulouse & I did a month substituting a Geography teacher at a local International School. My specialist subjects include the emerging curriculum areas of Global Perspectives & Cultural Awareness whereby the recommended methodologies encourage & enable students to work in groups, & both present & complete an extended piece of writing on their research. Skills: here with experience honed both as a learning resource specialist & as a coach for verbal dexterity & improved literacy, I am skilled at guiding students towards discoveries & so to effective independent learning. Personality: I am empathetic, friendly & fun (I have three kids at home!) & so can effectively build rapport with students of all age groups to best develop Active Learning - where students are encouraged to shape their learning strategies so to better ensure high motivation, enjoyment & achievement. My specialist subjects include the emerging curriculum areas of Global Perspectives & Cultural Awareness whereby the recommended methodologies encourage & enable students to work in groups, & both present & complete an extended piece of writing on their research. This wide area draws on a number of disciplines including Geography, International Relations, Environmentalism, Comparative Religion & Ethics. I also consistently embrace a holistic approach to literacy so to improve these skills across all the subjects. Adaptable as learning styles can be different. Better to ask than tell, of course - questions can differ (with scaffolding) according to differentiation . Good teachers should be able to enable students to be better at 'discovering' though better guidance. In this way the process of understanding aids memorization. I believe that learning should be 'active' meaning that students have a high sense of ownership in the process & so can help shape what works best for them Growing up & well into my adult years it was music, film & some sports - particularly football. Increasingly in my 20s I've developed a better thirst for knowledge & so read a lot about current affairs - ideally at a global level. Since my Masters level study in Equal Opportunities in Education I've been particularly interested in aspects of cultural diversity & increasingly since my move to Spain in how national identities & stereotypes are formed & can be deconstructed. However - I also have 3 young children & so I have to keep an active interest in their passions too.
