Experienced PhD Student Providing Engaging Lessons
You can book a free 20 minute, no-commitment introduction with any of our tutors. How does this work?
My favourite thing about teaching and tutoring is getting to know the students! I have seen students improve massively in confidence and ability over the course of our work together and it's a great feeling for both me and the student. My teaching style is approachable and I always try to provide the student with a relaxed learning environment - this helps us get to know each other and get the most out of our sessions.
I am a maths graduate from the University of Bath where I did a masters degree, and I currently am working towards a PhD at the University of Edinburgh. I specialise in maths and physics and I also teach chemistry. My research sits on the interface between maths and physics so I really enjoy teaching these subjects as this is what I work on every day!
My first priority is always creating a relaxed space where the student feels comfortable asking questions. I love my subject and want the student to love it too, so I aim to teach in the most approachable and engaging way I can. I firmly believe that an active approach is the best way to learn so I try to avoid asking students to remember formulas or to repeat the theory that they have learned at school. In a typical lesson I would aim to work through some problems with the student and have a discussion about the topic we're studying. I think students learn better when they are encouraged to put the pieces together themselves.
Hi, I'm Maia and I am a mathematics graduate. I hold a masters degree and am currently studying for my PhD in Edinburgh. My research is in applied maths which means that I am also studying topics in chemistry, physics, computing, and other application. My experience includes tutoring on a one-to-one basis as well as teaching classes of up to 16 students, so I use a range of different approaches to teaching. I'm sure we can work together to find the right style for you!
