A bit about Elisabeth P

I have taught history and politics in a secondary school for over 30 years and have recently begun tutoring to give me more flexibility in combining teaching with family caring responsibilities. Throughout my career, I have been keen to continue learning myself both because I find it very stimulating and also because I feel that being a learner helps me to understand better the needs of students and the challenges they face in learning. I completed an MA and PhD whilst teaching full-time and continue to read widely around my subjects, exploring fresh aspects and interpretations. I am keen to encourage students to develop the dispositions and abilities to become life-long learners. My teaching of A level History has been predominantly Tudor and Stuart British history and early modern European history. At GCSE I have taught a very broad range of topics. In Politics I have taught UK and US Politics as well as Political Ideologies. My PhD at the Institute of Education, University of London, was concerned with investigating the understandings which students need to develop in order to engage productively with historical sources and the insights gained into young people’s thinking from this research have proved very stimulating in my teaching. As well as considerable experience in teaching exam classes I have also examined history at GCSE, AS and A level and was employed by Ofqual in reviewing the most recent A level Politics specifications. I also have prepared individuals and small groups for Oxbridge entrance exams and interviews over many years. In teaching I feel it is important to begin by exploring the prior knowledge students bring to their learning. Even when a topic is new, students can make connections with understandings they have developed in previous contexts. This also helps me to identify the ways in which I can best support students in developing new conceptual understandings and strategies to master new content and tackle different sorts of questions. Thus, my main teaching style is dialogue with students. I aim to provide materials to help stimulate thinking and help structure learning and encourage students to reflect on the processes they are using so they can apply them in new contexts and thus become more independent in their learning.
