A question from Sherpa to Abel G...
A Level English Literature is a demanding but immensely rewarding subject. It's my speciality, and my mission to help students succeed - and enjoy - the course. Within that (and at GCSE, too) I've been 'the Shakespeare guy' for longer than I can remember, and I also specialise in drama, poetry, and 'classic' novels - see below. At university, my dissertation focussed on robots and AI in literature and dystopia. I could talk (and teach) all day on those, too! Here are some specific authors/texts I am experienced in teaching: A Level Shakespeare: Richard II; Richard III; The Tempest; Henry IV (1); Hamlet; Othello; King Lear; Measure For Measure; Antony & Cleopatra; Julius Caesar A Level Poetry: Carol Ann Duffy; Philip Larkin; Christina Rossetti; Tennyson; Sylvia Plath; Ted Hughes; Seamus Heaney; John Donne A Level Drama: Edward II; Dr Faustus; A Streetcar Named Desire A Level Novels: Jane Eyre; Sense and Sensibility; Dracula; Nineteen Eighty-Four; The Handmaid's Tale; On Chesil Beach; Wide Sargasso Sea; The Bloody Chamber GCSE Literature: An Inspector Calls; The Sign of the Four; Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde; Heroes; Of Mice And Men; Lord of the Flies; Welsh Poetry (for WJEC); and the AQA Power & Conflict cluster - most of the above Shakespeare plays plus Romeo and Juliet; Macbeth At KS3, I like to expose students to a rich variety of texts as they get ready for their GCSEs. I have used extracts from various authors to do this, including Mary Shelley; Margaret Atwood; Bram Stoker; Suzanne Collins; Max Brooks; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; Mark Haddon. When teaching poetry, I have used works by poets including Tennyson; Browning; Emily Dickinson; Maya Angelou; Brian Bilston; John Agard. For non-fiction sections, I have enjoyed creating and using my own scheme of work based around exploration, with extracts ranging from the moon landings to Captain Scott's doomed trip to the South Pole.
