A bit about Emma

Hi! My name is Emma and in 2019 I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a First Class Degree in English with Creative Writing. I have been tutoring for 7 years now and have over 800 hours of tutoring experience. I believe that building a rapport and an understanding with each of my students is what makes my tutoring so successful and my students' grades so impressive. I am very good at GCSE content and exam technique as I am well-versed in the GCSE syllabus, particularly AQA, having done it myself in 2014, and having tutored six students all the way through to their summer exams. Each one of my students achieved at least one grade higher than they were predicted. I currently have 4 students in their GCSE Years. I am also very good at teaching creative writing skills, as this is not only my passion as a writer, playwright, poet and actor but also a key element of my own degree and a crucial part of high achievement in the GCSE and KS3 syllabus. My lessons vary massively and this is how I keep students engaged; I spend an hour planning each of my lessons so that they are bespoke and focus on exactly what the student needs. I will ask parents and students what is being studied at school; if it is GCSE we will compile a list of books and papers and go through each in turn. If a student is struggling with the GCSE content then we will follow the lessons and reinforce the basic requirements of the papers, however I like to cover things that are missed in school- deeper discussions and more detailed analysis- things that the teacher won't have time for and this gives the student the opportunity to excel above and beyond. For KS3 I discuss with parents whether the student would like lessons that follow their school syllabus to improve confidence in class or something slightly different that adds colour and innovation to their learning- these can be easily mixed and matched and can grow and change with the student as they learn. My greatest success story was a neuro-diverse year 11 student that I tutored just before the pandemic whose exams were cancelled due to Covid19. As a result he was given a fail mark automatically- Level 3- by the school as this is what he had been predicated a year earlier. However, he entered for the English Language exam in November 2020 and I came onboard as a tutor. He worked extremely hard and even though concentration was something he struggled with we worked with it and in January of 2021 he got his results and had gained a Level 5 (equivalent to a high C/Low B) which was 2 whole grades above what he had been predicated by his teachers- he was absolutely overjoyed and told me that his mum bought him a delicious domino's pizza as a reward! I always encourage my students to follow their dreams and am myself an actress and writer/director and am currently working on projects for both stage and screen. Last year (2022) I had a dark-comedy play that was taken to a number of Fringe Festivals and had a London run. This year I have a film project in pre-production. This not only gives me industry experience in these areas but also allows my students to see how skills in English are essential for creative and practical purposes. I love teaching GCSE as it is such a rewarding job. I have a lot of experience with AQA as this is the exam-board of choice in my area, however I have also taught Edexcel a number of times and many of the techniques and texts overlap. I also teach KS3 English and often follow the school syllabus whilst allowing the student to choose a book over the summer that they would like to study with me- this gives them a sense of control and encourages them to enjoy reading. I also offer lessons in completely different topics to the ones being studied in the classroom and this is more useful for students who are struggling to enjoy their school lessons as it breaks them away from the monotonous cycle that they might associate English with and encourages a healthier relationship with the subject.
