A bit about Julia W

I have been teaching in primary schools for over 30 years and am now looking forward to working 1 to 1 in order to be able to provide focused, bespoke support for primary children who simply need that little extra support to gain confidence in themselves and in their school life. I believe in providing a friendly, positive environment in which children can flourish in order to achieve their potential. I live in Berkshire and love music (playing piano, clarinet and flute), cooking (cakes especially), walking, keeping fit and pottering in the garden. I have been a primary school class teacher and school music specialist so have taught mixed ability classes throughout KS1 and KS2. I worked mainly in a high achieving school in Buckinghamshire and am familiar with the 11+ system. As class teacher I taught all subjects including maths and English to mixed ability classes. As music specialist, I taught a range of music skills and extra curricular activities such as orchestra, choir, ukulele, African drumming and recorder club. I believe that I provide a positive and supportive environment in which children feel able to question, willing to "have a go", and feel motivated to do their best. Individual lessons will be planned in advance and relate to learning needs after discussion with parents and/or pupils. Lessons will begin with an engaging activity to focus the mind set the tone of the session. This will be followed by a discussion of the lesson objective and a related activity that will enable me to assess the child's starting point and errors or misunderstandings in skills or knowledge. The lesson will include a range of activities appropriate to the learning goal and the child, , these to include demonstration of a skill, teaching of knowledge, practice, investigative activities, short games and challenges. The lesson will end with a revision of the learning and a short assessment in order to inform next lessons.
