A bit about Vicki L

I am a qualified secondary school teacher who started my tutoring business in September 2019. I strive to help, support and educate children from ages 7+ since completing my teacher training (PGCE) at the University of York. Since starting my business, I have taught over 1,000 quality lessons, varying from basic reading and writing skills at Key Stage 2 to English Language A Level. I have also had the opportunity to work with those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and MAAT (Most Able And Talented), creating provisions to help support, stretch and challenge at a level appropriate for each individual. Throughout my time as a tutor, I have had wonderful opportunities such as teaching in 10 different countries and 3 continents via webcam. I was also offered the opportunity to become an online tutor for large group tutorials during the CoronaVirus crisis, seeing numbers of up to 160 students attending at a time over 36 sessions. I currently offers tuition at the following levels: Key Stage 2, 11+, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, GCSE, A Level English Language, Functional Skills and Personal Statement writing. I am also available to carry out marking in any of these areas (subject to exam board). I am a trained teacher with a PGCE in English and a BA degree in English Language and Linguistics from the University of York. I have spent a year training to be a teacher and as a result I have up to date resources and understanding of KS3 and KS4 school work and exam specifications. I have a huge passion for my subject and have spent many years improving my subject knowledge in order to make me the best possible teacher and tutor. I wanted to become a tutor as I find working with students on a one-to-one basis hugely rewarding and love watching my students grow in confidence and capability. I believe I am brilliant in finding what students need in additional help and support with within my subject and use a wide range of teaching approaches in order to maximise student learning. I have previous experience of working with students from a range of backgrounds and wish to help students on their educational journey to help them achieve their goals. I've been incredibly lucky to have some hardworking students work alongside me, who have gone from strength to strength. I have had 9 GCSE students who have improved by at least one grade, usually across 8-10 lessons. I have also taught A Level students who have come to me working at a U and have achieved an A* at the end of their course. I have also had 15 Key Stage 2 and 3 students exceed their predicted progress by 1-2 sub-levels on average. I first graduated from the University of York with BA(Hons) in English Language and Linguistics in 2018. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I spent time working with a variety of schooling projects. During this time I had my first taste of one-to-one tutoring with two Year 11 students at a local school. I also participated in a students in schools programme which allowed me to volunteer as a Teaching Assistant and learn about the difference between higher education classrooms and secondary school classrooms. Alongside my studies, I was an active member in the York Branch of Sexpression UK, a charity dedicated to teaching sex and relationships education to children. Here I gained experience of running seminar sessions as an external facilitator, allowing me to progress in my behaviour management techniques and ability to create a rapport with a class of students. In addition to the teaching, I also worked as a member of the Advocacy Team and Treasurer. I then went on to study Post-Graduate Certificate in Education specialising in English to start her teaching career. My current availability is Tuesday 7:15-8:15pm; Wednesday 2-5:30pm; Thursday 12-2pm; Friday 1-5pm. I love the variety that English as a subject offers. In order to be well-rounded as a tutor, I try to cover a wide range of topics with English being at the centre. For example: Persuasive writing - Women who changed the world (covering Politics, world issues and History) Fiction writing - Historical settings using events as the centre of our writing e.g. the Great Fire of London and the Gunpowder Plot. Poetry - Identity and Culture focussing on poets of different backgrounds and their perceptions of the world. I have had a love of learning from a very early age which expanded into a passion for education as a craft. Whilst at secondary school, I had some incredibly supportive teachers and some who were somewhat discouraging. Since then, I have vowed as a teacher to lift my students up as much as I can; build their confidence; and help them achieve their goals. As one of my old teachers told me, "Shoot for the moon. even if you miss, you'll land among stars."
