A question from Sherpa to Rijula M...
My position at a college as a Study Skills and Exam Teacher, an FE institution, entailed working to the quality and performance standards set by exam boards as well as our clients—both mainstream and those with Additional Learning Support (ALS) needs—in areas like GCSE and Functional Skills Maths. In the recent academic year, I also took the lead in coordinating Learning Coaches and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), ensuring reliable coverage for both workshops and drop-in sessions to provide tailored support for all ALS learners, whether they were 16 to 18-year-olds or adult students. This included supporting the usage of magnifiers and screen readers (visual aids), text-to-speech software (literacy aids), digital worksheets, and graphic organisers—assistive technology that improved outcomes by supporting both staff and students in their effective use. Another core part of my responsibilities was delivering CPD sessions for LSAs, equipping them with strategies to support challenging learners. These sessions included literacy techniques like deconstructing text and pacing communication, as well as numeracy training on subject knowledge and scaffolding approaches. I have taught and overseen lessons in a multiplicity of contexts that cannot use a one-size-fits-all approach to pedagogy. The art of connecting with the learner looks different online and in person; one-on-one and in the classroom setting; with gifted students and struggling ones; and, of course, from learner to learner even in the same context. Long before COVID, I was training tutors tasked with delivering remote Maths (primary and secondary) tutoring. This allowed me to conduct thousands of lesson observations during my tenure as an Academic Lead at Third Space Learning, London. This honed my knack for identifying what is holding a teacher back from facilitating learner achievement and giving specific, actionable feedback that I would employ myself in their shoes. Compassion, consistency, and creativity are my biggest strengths for every learner in each lesson.
