Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have been teaching Science and Maths for 23 years to GCSE level. I have helped dozens of students to achieve great results. I am can teach separate Chemistry, Physics and Biology (plus Geology) to GCSE level. I teach Chemistry, Biology and Geology to A level.

What do you specialise in?

Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Geology to GCSE level. Chemistry, Biology and Geology to A level.

How do your lessons usually plan out?

After consultation with the student in advance of the lesson I plan the lesson using appropriate materials such as worksheets, power points or videos to cover a specific topic. For maths I usually start with a few short questions roughly at the level the student is working at. I would then go through questions on the new topic to be covered in order to show the necessary technique. I would then "hand over" more and more to the student as they grasp the concepts. For science I would usually cover some background to the topic and then use appropriate resources (images, videos, power points etc) to teach the content and provide the student with opportunities to ask questions. I would then present the student with questions appropriate to the material covered. At all times I would try and create a good environment for dialogue between myself and the student in order to optimise the learning experience.

When did you first start tutoring?

I have taught in schools since 1998 and started as a tutor in 2005 whilst continuing with my school teaching duties. I have reduced my in school work and increased my tutoring, though I am still teaching maths (resit GCSE and Functional Skills) to students part-time at a small college associated with Bristol Rovers Football Club.

What do you love most about teaching your subject?

Building a good rapport with students and seeing them gain the necessary understanding. In sciences particularly I enjoy bringing the subject to life and showing its relevance to everyday life and how an understanding of science makes you a better citizen.

What is your teaching style?

I like to think that I can alter my style according to the students needs, but I would say that the key aspect of teaching is good communication between teacher and student. In addition, I will provide good examples of the work being covered and plenty of exam question practice.
