A bit about Alex H

I'm Alex (she/her), a life-long linguaphile who's been tutoring MFL for the past 6 years. I took up tutoring in the hope of sharing my obsession with language and simplifying what can be a tricky subject. I was brought up speaking English, but I also speak German, Italian and French fluently. I taught English at an Italian high school last year and even online during the pandemic. Teaching English as a foreign language gave me a greater appreciation for my native tongue and made me a bit of a whizz when it comes to online teaching platforms. I recently graduated from Oxford and have the tips and tricks that helped me learn languages at school fresh in my mind - if you need help with Primary/Secondary/GCSE/A-Level languages, then I'm your guy! Foreign languages are my thing (French, German and Italian). I have been tutoring French, German and Italian for the past 6 years, covering levels from primary school to sixth-form. I can specialise in any subject matter that students are finding difficult; be that grammar, vocab, specific exam prep. or just general conversation practice. Every lesson can be shaped around the student, but there is definitely a rough template I try to follow. Lessons usually start with a recap of the topic we've covered previously to make sure that the lesson is building on a firm foundation of knowledge. We then go on to summarise a grammar topic and look through some examples. The student works with me through exercises covering this grammar to see whether they can put the knowledge I've given them into practice. Finally, the student completes a reading/listening exercise that reinforces their understanding of the topic. I try to include all four skills of language learning in every lesson: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Make as many mistakes as possible! Language classes at school can be anxiety-filled, with students scared of messing up. I was a little like this at school and it's normal. I want to fight this language-lesson-anxiety by encouraging my students to 'have a go' and use their mistakes as chances to improve. Mistakes are useful to me as a tutor because they tell me where we need to work on and allow me to plan my lessons with that in mind. Language learning should be fun, so don't punish yourself for not getting everything right the first time!
