A bit about Dominic H

I am a qualified science teacher with over 3 years experience teaching and tutoring. I’m passionate about science, particularly Biology and the healthcare sciences. I’m currently a science teacher in a school in Newcastle upon Tyne and regularly teach Biology to both GCSE and A level students. I have a lot of experience writing curriculums and so I know the subject area and exam board requirements thoroughly. This helps me to bridge the gap and help students understand exactly what they need to know to get a fantastic grade in their exams. I received a PGCE from Durham University and a 2:1 from Newcastle University in Biomedical Science. I specialise in Biology but love teaching science at key stage 3 and 4 too. My undergraduate degree was in Biomedical Science and so I have a special interest in this area, particularly medicine, biology and biochemistry. I particularly enjoy linking elements of the three main science subjects in my lessons so students gain a holistic understanding of science. My lessons always consist of starters in which students recall information from prior lessons. I ensure students understand these previous concepts before moving on to the main content of the lesson. I then use my expertise to ensure students understand the chunk of knowledge needed for the lesson which usually links to the starter. Students then practise the skills or understanding that has been taught to ensure they comprehend it and can apply this knowledge to scenarios and exam questions. We will then finish with a ‘plenary’ which ties off the lesson and solidifies understanding of the basic concepts of the lesson. I have access to a wide range of exam questions which I use in my lessons so that students get plenty of practice in answering the type of questions they will need to complete come exam season. I am fully capable of teaching ages 14-16 GCSE Science all mainstream exam boards which follow the national curriculum including AQA, OCR WJEC and Pearson Edexcel. I also have experience in and am fully able to teach to all A level exam board specifications for ages 16-18 including AQA, OCR, Edexcel and CIE. I also have extended experience in teaching the level WJEC Equedas Medical Science qualification. I first began tutoring over 3 years ago during my PGCE year using online tutoring platforms. This allowed me to develop my teaching and tutoring skills so that I could become a fully developed teacher and tutor capable of pushing students to reach their fullest potential. Witnessing the breakthroughs that students made in their understanding confirmed for me why I love teaching! Science is such a broad subject to teach and to understand. I love how each individual aspect of science is explicitly linked to the next and having a holistic understanding of the subject allows a deep understanding of how the world around us works. I hope to covey this passion to students I teach and show them how linking concepts in science gives thorough understanding of the complexities of our surroundings.
