A bit about Trish R

I have 3 grown up children and 2 dogs, one of which is a puppy. My dogs are full of fun and always into mischief. When I'm not playing with my dogs or working, I enjoy reading and have recently taken up gardening. I have grown some delicious blueberries and blackberries. I have been teaching and tutoring for about twenty years. I have taught many children with specific learning difficulties and have developed many successful strategies which I utilise. Early reading is also a strength of mine and I have many strategies for teaching this. I am also competent at supporting children through 11+ and private school examinations, and have had many successes. I begin my lessons with an activity, loosely linked to the lesson topic. I will then teach the concept, or go over and extend a previously one. The main part of my lesson involves the students practising using the new method, or consolidating a previous one. Finally, I end with a last practise which will extend the students and ensure that they have understood the lesson. If not, it can be re taught. I began tutoring approximately ten years ago. I was initially asked by a friend to help her child. The child was in year 1, and was struggling with learning to read. I worked with this child until they reached high school age. I 'collected' a number of other children, all different ages, from recommendations given by the initial parent. I have tutored children from Reception up to Year 6. I love teaching primary age children. What I enjoy most is the way their faces light up when they understand something and they say "Oh, that's how it works!" and "I get it now!". Finding the way a child learns is like a puzzle to be solved. Trying different approaches is both rewarding and fun, and experience has shown me that every child understands things in a slightly different way. I like to think that my teaching style is very fluid - it will adapt to the child that I am teaching. Many years of teaching have led me to the conclusion that sometimes it's better to go back to basics rather than powering through a given topic. This ensures that greater progress is made in the long run. I have high expectations for my pupils and have never been proved wrong.
