A bit about Benjamin R

I'm an MPhys Master of Physics graduate from the University of Oxford, with two years' experience tutoring Maths and Physics for GCSE, A-Level and International A-Level. When I'm not tutoring, I'm a keen climber and a frisbee enthusiast. I love tutoring because it's so rewarding to build understanding and solve problems with my tutees. I specialise in tutoring Maths and Physics - in my final year of university I specialised in quantum and solid-state physics, developing a novel design for the circuits used to power state-of-the-art quantum computers at Oxford. I like to adapt the structure and style of my tutorials to each student to get the most out of our time, following a chat at the beginning of our first tutorial. Generally, though, the structure of my tutorials looks like this: • Recap of previous tutorial • Overview of tutorial and discussion of key topics • Focused exam question practice • Summary of content covered I started tutoring two years ago, volunteering for The Oxford Hub as part of their 'Schools Plus' programme. I helped teach physics and maths to disadvantaged GCSE students in schools surrounding Oxford, and absolutely loved it! Since then, I've tutored remotely with Lanterna Education for over a year, tutoring physics at A-Level, and for Easy-A, helping GCSE and A-Level students with their maths problems. The thing I love most about teaching maths and physics is the shared sense of achievement between me and my tutees when we manage to tackle and understand a concept they've really struggled with - be it simultaneous equations or differential calculus. It's always a great buzz! My teaching style is informal and friendly, yet structured and focused. I'm not a teacher, so I don't like to have that air of formality with my tutees, but I do try to create an environment where we can focus and work efficiently. Many people really struggle with physics and maths because they're conceptually challenging, rather than memory-intensive or requiring speedy calculation. My teaching philosophy is therefore that building understanding and intuition is paramount to learning exam answers word for word. I like to use carefully selected exam questions in my tutorials that probe at the areas my tutees struggle with most, so we can pinpoint the areas we need to focus on together, building understanding as we go. Basically any and all! The nice thing about tutoring physics and maths is that whilst the specific requirements of any given exam board may vary, the underlying concepts are all the same. In each tutorial, I make sure to discuss and tackle specific points on the specification of the individual I'm tutoring, working through exam questions from the board that they're following. This means that we don't waste time covering content we don't need to, and each tutorial is custom-fitted to each student I tutor.
