A bit about Tommy F

My first experience tutoring someone came at the early age of 11, when I taught myself the foundation maths GCSE course to help my sister who recently failed her exams. My love of teaching stemmed from here, as soon as I was in year 9 I began helping teachers lead maths lessons and this continued until I left sixth form at 18. I began charging for tutoring at 17, initially mainly for friends. Nothing brings more satisfaction than seeing tutee’s achieve something they believed they couldn’t. Whether it be a single topic or maths as a whole, when I finally see something click with a pupil it brings a great feeling. My lessons can normally be split into 4 sections: The first being a starter, this could be anything from countdown to testing knowledge retention from a previously covered topic. Next I will go through the theory of a topic and show an example of this is applied, normally on a past paper question. I will also run through where the marks come from on these questions, I believe this helps students build a mental checklist for this topic that they can apply. Thirdly, The tutee will begin to attempt questions. These will increase in difficulty as the lesson progresses. The vast majority of questions I use will be past paper questions, this helps removes the shock factor when they sit an exam as they should have seen questions in a very similar style before. Finally, we will finish with a summary. This is where we recap the lesson, what was done well, what still needs work and what we will do next time. I am currently studying for a masters of mathematics at the University of York. I achieved an A* in Maths and an A in Further Mathematics at A-Level. I have 4 years of in person experience tutoring GCSE along with 2 years experience with A-Level. During lockdown I moved to mainly online tutoring, since then I have 600+ hours experience over a couple different sites.
