A bit about Abigail F

Committed to helping you achieve goals! Specialise with Reading, Writing and Maths support for primary aged children. I am experienced in teaching English as Forgein Language and have worked closely with children with SEND needs such as ADHD, autism and apraxia. Have taught in mainstream schools in the UK as well as International Schools in Russia and the Middle East. I specialise in supporting primary aged children 3-12 with their national curriculum learning. Particularly I love supporting phonics, reading and comprehension. In addition I can also support and scaffold Sociology and Criminology in KS2 learners. I like lessons that are fun and engaging where students feel good about themselves and are working towards their goals. I like to empower my students and work with me as a team to get the most out of their learning. We will start by assessing needs and then while building on your interests we will customise learning so it is relevant and tailored to you and your learning style. I enjoy speedy activities that build on previous knowledge and target skills. This keeps learning fresh and the change of pace keeps things engaging. Students complete tasks with my support and then I will provide feedback that we can work on together. I have been tutoring in person since 2016 as well as teaching full time for 3 years in mainstream classrooms in England as well as in International Schools in Russia and Asia. In these places I taught national curriculum as well as teaching English as an additional language as I am also TEFL qualified. My favourite thing about teaching reading and English is how much confidence it unlocks in students. When they are sure in themselves and their skills are secure many students feel they can show off their full personality, particularly when learners are non-native speakers. In younger learners their imagination can thrive and their curiosity is not limited. In terms of Sociology I love when students can question and conceptualise society and the way the world works for themselves, developing their own thoughts and opinions about themes and issues. In general I love teaching purely to see students enjoy their learning and make progress towards their INDIVIDUAL targets. My teaching style very much engages in multiple types of learning. I enjoy including games, media such as videos and songs as well as activities that include and enhance multiple skills at once. For example, using chants and visuals while playing a memory game to remember facts and techniques. I think learning should be collaborative and will do all I can to support my students but my main approach is to scaffold learnign so learners are independent and reflective of their own learning journey. My favourite thing about being a tutor is the relationship built with students. It is a joy to able to watch and share successes with students. It is highly rewarding supporting an individual achieve their personal goals no matter how small. My teaching philosphy is very holistic, viewing the learner as a whole. This makes my teaching style very student centred. I believe that through relationship and understanding the best learning occurs. It is through a safe and supportive relationship, an environment that a love for learning can occur. A space in which mistakes are celebrated means learners are not fearful and can become excited about new skills and knowledge. Students love that I am not always so serious with my approach. While I am very serious about their progress and well being, my style is very friendly and fun. My lessons are not plain but full of interaction with a variety of materials and methods. I feel that my students like that I am supportive of them in all aspects of their endeavour towards their goals. My greatest success has been developing learner's confidence so that they are self assured and secure in their abilities. I love my students to be self aware about what they can and can't do and how to address their "can't"s. To be critical thinkers in order to approach obstacles with resilience. I am qualified to be a tutor though my teaching qualification and QTS, a TEFL qualification to teach non-native English speakers as well as much real life experience in classrooms across the globe as well as online. I was inspired to be a teacher because of my own education. I had a wonderful education and felt I truly wanted to give that to others. In addition, I love being able to learn from others, I am also learning alongside my students with every interaction. Outside of teaching, I love travelling and exploring different cultures. With that, I like to cook dishes from various places I have travelled. In my spare time, I like to swim and go bouldering in the mountains. I enjoy crime tv shows as well as reading a range of literature. I can support with exam prep and revision and am flexible with exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel and Cambridge.
