A bit about Callum J

I am a professional tutor and track & field athlete - a strange combo, but it weirdly works! I am a graduate of the University of Bristol where I earned a master's degree in Engineering Mathematics, a subject which builds on the key mathematical principles learned during GCSE and A-levels and applies them to real world problems. I was tutoring Maths and Physics on a part-time basis during my time at university, and since graduating I have been a professional tutor, having helped students of all levels achieve their desired grades. I have been tutoring as a full-time professional for the last 4 years and have vast experience with a variety of different exam boards and curriculums, including AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Almost a decade worth of tutoring experience has provided me with numerous advantages when it comes to working with students of various abilities. All students learn best in a slightly different way and have different approaches to problem solving. My experience means I am able to apply the optimal teaching method to each individual student, helping them to learn quickly and effectively, ultimately providing them with the best chance of success come exams. My other interests include cross-country and athletics, in which I have competed at a national standard - the main goal for me this season is to run a sub-4 minute mile! Training as an athlete is a big part of my life and has shown me that hard work pays off, which is a philosophy that I believe extends to all walks off life, including academics! I first started tutoring during my own A-levels. I found that I was doing very well in maths and further maths classes and some of my friends asked if I would consider helping them. I did, and really enjoyed not only the process of tutoring maths itself, but the feeling of seeing someone becoming more and more confident. I continued tutoring on a part time basis while I was at university, and became a full-time, professional, tutor once I graduated (in 2017). I have enjoyed every minute of it! Like many students, I sometimes struggled to see how much of what I learned during maths class at school would be of any use in the real world. But during my degree I suddenly realised we would quite literally be lost without it! Everything from keeping planes in the air, bridges from collapsing, cars from skidding and keeping you connected on social media, all involve (a lot of!) maths, some of it curiously complex, and some of it surprisingly simple. My favourite thing about teaching this subject is helping students realise that the very bits of maths they are learning, go into making our world the way it is - it really creates new perspective and makes the learning much more fun (I think anyway)! I generally have a conversational style of teaching with back and forth communication between myself and the student, I find this often draws students to figuring out answers to their questions themselves, without relying on me to directly answer it for them. I try to help students feel more confident in their own ability by encouraging independent problem solving techniques - if they cannot reach the final solution, how close can they get on their own? Often they surprise themselves! I always emphasise the importance of clear and honest communication between student and tutor to help get the most out their learning. My first step with new tutees is always to understand how they learn best so that I can apply my experience of different teaching methods in the best way possible. I will get to know the student and what their goals/expectations are and if necessary help them to set these goals in the first instance. First and foremost, I aim to make learning under my guidance a positive, enjoyable and rewarding experience! I specialise in Maths and Physics, but have also taught Chemistry and Biology during my tutoring career. My Masters degree was in Engineering Mathematics, a course which expands on the key mathematical principles learned during GCSE and A-Levels and applies these principles to real world problems. This has given me a deep understanding of mathematics and physics, but also a very rich appreciation for just how applicable the knowledge is in real life!
