A bit about Julia C

I have more than 20 years English teaching experience and still feel passionate about inspiring students to read deeply and write with flair. My skills include: teaching English as a 2nd language; GCSE English Language (including Year 7-9 preparation) ; A level English Language (previously as teacher and examiner); Creative Writing; Functional Skills. I graduated in 2021 with an MA in Creative Writing. I have gained a: 1st class BA (hons) degree in English (major) with English Language Teaching (minor); PGCE in Further Education; TESOL Trinity College Certificate. I was awarded a grade A as an AQA A level English Language examiner. I am able to adapt my knowledge to any exam specifications, and am currently tutoring on Edexcel, OCR and AQA specifications. I have been tutoring Chinese children from Beijing on Zoom since December 2019. I taught GCSE English Language for Adult Education. I am currently writing a historical novel and proofreading an autobiography. In non-pandemic times, I host and tutor International students at home. English language is still my passion. The structure of language has always been a passion of mine. Having recently studied Creative Writing I particularly enjoy sharing ways of reading to inspire writing. I am fascinated by the effects of language techniques. The subject is diverse and remains fresh. English Language lessons can be adapted to suit students' interests in 1:1 or small group sessions and so provides opportunities to engage learners. The sessions broaden my own reading and perspectives too. I want to encourage students to feel more confident in their abilities. I hope to achieve the balance between focussed learning and a happy environment. I am a planner so will always be prepared based upon the students' achievements in previous lessons. If a student comes to class with specific questions I will happily divert from my plan to meet their needs. I always work to the specific exam criteria and mark schemes with a clear focus on reaching the next level and breaking through any barriers to learning. I encourage students to ask questions and offer a range of activities to develop students' skills. The GCSE courses provide us with the opportunity to practice exam skills on language extracts drawn from a wide range of sources so I aim to include texts relating to students' specific interests alongside past exam papers. Learning is a life long skill. Encouragement is key to a student's success. As a tutor I aim to foster a positive and productive learning environment. If I can interest and inspire a student to be curious about my subject then they will be ready to learn. The level of success and the definition of success may vary from student to student.
