A bit about Laura

Hi there and welcome to Sherpa! My name is Laura and it's a pleasure to meet you. If you are here, it's because you are looking for help with your English. And the good news is that you have come to the right place! I love books; Shakespeare; poetry; words; and the intricacies of grammar, punctuation and syntax. I look forward to sharing that passion with you. English can seem daunting at times as there is no one "right answer" but rather it's about the detail and depth to which you analyse or explain or describe. I have been an English teacher for over 10 years and an Edexcel examiner for both GCSE English Lit and English Language since 2017. I know what the exam board is looking for and can tell you how to achieve your very best grades. I have a slight new-notebook-and-stationery obsession and I love wandering around bookshops and picking out new books to read. My favourite thing about being a tutor is that we can focus on exactly what you need to succeed. I can tailor the lesson and homework to you and we can go as quickly or as slowly as required. Without the rest of the class there, you can ask any question you might have and know we will get the answer to it. My teaching style is a combination of 5 things: 1. Giving you strategies and systems to approach things like how to write a narrative from an unseen prompt or how to analyse a poem (in depth!) within the exam time. We want to get rid of that "the blank page is staring at me" feeling. 2. Asking you lots of questions (big and small) to help you develop your ideas and understanding and to get you ready for those exams. 3. Providing you with feedback is one of the most important things to help you improve. When you do a piece of work then I will make sure you get quick and useful comments back on what you did well and how it could be even better. 4. Having high expectations for you! My lessons are engaging and high challenge - I want you to achieve the best you possibly can. I'm here to help you tackle things that might seem difficult. 5. Supporting and guiding you. If you already knew everything, why would we be here? I want you to feel comfortable getting things wrong sometimes because that is how we learn. I teach: Edexcel English Language GCSE, Edexcel English Literature GCSE, AQA English Language GCSE, AQA English Literature GCSE, Cambridge (CIE) First Language English IGCSE, Cambridge (CIE) Literature in English.
