A bit about Mark P

I have taught Science in schools in the UK for over 30 years and qualified as an Advanced Skills teacher in 2003. Recently I have examined for AQA in GCSE Physics and A-level Astrophysics. I previously worked as a computer programmer and used to enjoy writing and developing my own games . I'm a keen landscape photographer and have exhibited my work in the past. I love the great outdoors walking and mountain biking . I have three children , three dogs an owl and 6 chickens , which definitely keep me active. I specialise in Science at GCSE and Physics up to A-level. I have taught the majority of exam board specifications. I am an examiner in GCSE Physics and A-Level Astrophysics. I love the way Science can explain the wonders we can see in every day life and the enjoyment of making a complicated subject seem simple. Science always opens up the mind to ask they questions "Why?" and "How?" I have taught from KS2 to KS5 in Science. I have taught mainly AQA specifications but have taught Edexcel and WJEC. Bsc (Hons) in Physics and Computer science, PGCE in Science. Apart from becoming a teacher in the first place my greatest achievement in teaching was passing my assessment to become an Advanced Skills Teacher. It was a full mini OFSTED inspection of my teaching along with the views of fellow staff, governors, parents and pupils. It was fabulous to her students and colleagues be so supportive of me. My tutoring style is relaxed and pro-active. I will go at a pace which suits the student enabling them to develop independence and confidence in their own learning. Young people need to feel relaxed and be able to ask questions without feeling any pressure. Students learn much more quickly when they feel confident and valued and I always strive to do this in my teaching. I am happy to liaise with parents and set achievable goals for students. I would like to feel that my lessons are an open discussion rather than simply instructional in nature. I also enjoy making it fun. When planning my sessions I always ensure I find out what the student needs to cover and try to understand what skills they need to develop to ensure excellent progress. I will use real life situations whenever possible to develop understanding of difficult concepts and ensure any questions set are exam focused to maximise impact. I prefer a relaxed style with a focus on applying scientific laws to real life!
