When did you first start tutoring?

I have been a professional tutor at organisations for over a year now. But prior to that I have had over 6 years of teaching and tutoring experience as a student myself. It started when my parents (who are drama teachers) brought me into class as a drama workshop teaching assistant for PAARS, a charity for children with behavioural needs. Since then I've helped teachers train fellow students to ace GCSE questions in booster clubs, tutored A-level exam prep 1 - 1 after school and even taught IT skills to senior citizens for the Age UK Silver Surfer's programme.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that knowing your student well is the key to effective learning. It is essential to have keen listening skills, and be able to identify exactly what the student needs and expects in their own words. Then, finding analogies and examples to match a student's personal intuition and language. Combine these with assessment strategies to gauge their current level and understanding, and a tutor can effectively deliver efficient tailored teaching. I strongly stand by my mantra "Fit the Lesson to the Learner", and employ my years of experience and intuition to provide this kind of attentive, bespoke experience for all of my students.

How do your lessons usually plan out?

I believe that knowing your student well is the key to effective learning. It is essential to have keen listening skills, and be able to identify exactly what the student needs and expects in their own words. I combine this with practical examples and other assessment strategies to gauge their current level and understanding, then work on any topics the student finds trickier.

What do students love most about your teaching style?

Students respond best when I break down difficult concepts and abstract ideas into practical and familiar examples. I show students the most successful strategies for problem solving which I have developed over the many years I have taught the subject and when I was a student myself. Student's love the boost of confidence when they fully understand a complicated topic for the first time!
