A bit about Serena M

Having had around 2 decades of teaching experience, I am able to use a pedagogic method of teaching tailor-made for each individual or group. I have taught of English in various contexts: elementary english for youngsters, after- school groups, homework support, high school teacher putting together specific course and activities for students Professor at University level preparing for exams; refresher courses for adults(individuals and groups),preparation of specific in-house training programs for enterprises and employees as well as preparation of and carrying out of TOEIC exam. and finally, extensive BULATS, Cambridge and CELTA experience I love sharing my joy of the English language and finding the best possible way to transmit that knowledge. I love seeing the students grow as they learn and gain confidence as they master their new skills. I've been told my teaching style is accessible to everyone, that the lessons are well structured with a creative twist. My lessons are well thought through, never boring and I am there to offer support outside of lesson time. I always try to be over prepared, to ensure I have lots of backup material. I also make sure we are following student objectives whenever possible. A few years after I started teaching, I was offered a job in an Italian high school. I was warned by the faculty, prior to the beginning of term, that the 25 students were all ' challenging' and at the 'bottom of the class'. This was all I needed to make a concerted effort to make them fall in love with the English language. During the course of those 6 months, I asked the students for input and included them in the selection of what we would be learning. By the end of the course, they were participating in school debates in English, writing a short play which was presented to the rest of the school, and singing along with my guitar, to mention a few things. I absolutely loved those students, I knew they had been written off by the school system and I wanted to inspire and respect them. Hopefully that's what I achieved! I play guitar, write and sing my own songs. I also love travelling and learning new languages. I have lived overseas for the past 20 years. I am quite slow to pick up new languages but I really love meeting the locals and testing my communication skills. I am extremely fortunate to be able to live and work in a foreign country and I doubt my travel fever will slow down any time soon. Fear and learning don't go together. I know what it's like to learn a new language and sometimes, fear can be a crippling thing. I endeavour to make my lessons as fun and informative as possible in order to take away the anxiety factor.
