A bit about Katharine N

I am an Oxford Graduate with 11 Years experience of Home Tutoring; 2 years Online experience and I have worked in many Oxford Summer Schools teaching whole classes. I attended Christ Church College, Oxford, which has educated 13 British Prime Ministers!! I was one of the FIRST FEMALE STUDENTS there and I studied modern foreign languages. I love to instil confidence and exam technique in my students, so they can go on to have the same amazing opportunities in life that I have enjoyed! I also have a Springer Spaniel and a Partner, who is an actor and writer. He wrote for the BBC, "my parents are aliens"! and "MI HIGH". I specialise in English tuition at KS4/GCSE level, Tefl & German GCSE. I also love Creative Writing and am working on my first novel. I love to coach on Exam Papers 1 & 2 for both subjects. Text comprension, including old-style texts from the 19th C. Also I am excellent at helping students understand their War Poems! By contextualising the times. As a Writer myself, I am known among my clients for my coaching in Creative Writing. Many a student of mine has entered competitions and won e.g. the BBC 500 Word Competition. 1994 I studied Classroom Technique and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I used this qualification while living and working in Munich, Germany. I picked it up again in 2010 when I left a career in Social Services and haven't looked back....... How do I prepare ? Well as thoroughly as possible, while leaving something to "happen" in the lesson, a certain MAGIC that occurs when tutor and student are on the same page/wagelength and the student begins to "get it"!! I use many resources such as: BBC Bitesize, CGP revision courses, Twinkl, Quizlet and Spellzone. Of course, I also have materials I myself have designed. A certain SHIFT that happens at some point, usually a month or two in, whereby the student gains confidence and starts to give more mature responses verbally and on paper; which are well-spelt and acceptable to the examiner..... and consequently their life's journey. You KNOW the ANSWER yourself, if you will only look closely, listen, practice and take risks! AQA mainly, KS2, KS3, KS4 Edexcel too, of course, KS2, KS3, KS4 OCR KS3, KS4 IB International Baccalaurate (when I had a student in Myanmar !!) IELTS for secondary language learners TOEFL I love the ARTS of course, what teacher doesn't? Reading literature, watching literature in the theatre, viewing Art of all kinds. Walking my dog and dancing Zumba !! Masters degree in Modern Languages, CHRIST CHURCH COLLEGE, OXFORD 1987 Masters degree in Social Policy, RUSKIN COLLEGE, OXFORD & OXFORD BROOKES RSA TEFL Qualification Cambridge Board 1994 in English as a foreign language The gorgeous MRS HOLLINGSWORTH, my English Teacher at School, who believed in me and gave me the starring role in the School Play, LOL !!
