A bit about Ellen

A 2nd year student of Marine Biology at the University of Exeter, who has experience as an online tutor with My Tutor as well as mentoring younger science students. I have participated in multiple science trips ranging from a biodiversity statistics trip in Malaysia, to conducting a marine report in Bali, which has refined my scientific knowledge. In the future I aspire to work in the field of marine conservation or genetics. I lived as an expat for 14 years this has given me the opportunity to interact with numerous different cultures and environments, providing me with an open mind, different perspectives and an extroverted attitude. I specialise in KS3, GCSE Science (physics, chemistry and biology) and A-Level Biology, across all exam boards so I am able to personalise each session for the student. Biology has always been my favourite subject and specialty, but I do have over 70 hours of experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level science students, in both groups and 1-1 session. However I prefer one to one session as the student feels more comfortable to come forward and ask any questions. Our sessions will begin with short discussion where the student explains to me what they already know about the topic, it helps me identify their strengths and areas we can work on together. Then we move through the session's content at a pace where the student is absorbing the information and asking questions throughout. I welcome my student to be proactive in our sessions, asking questions, answering questions and having a go at explaining the content. I ensure the student feels comfortable in my lessons to make mistakes and we can work through them together. We then conclude the session with some summary questions from past paper to apply and solidify their knowledge. Outside of tutoring I am extremely active, have a strong passion for conservation and travel. I often go to the gym and am captain of my university netball team. In addition I am a PADI Rescue Diver (which is a great way to interact with the marine environment) and am learning how to surf. I am also a member of the wildlife society at my university. My teaching style is extremely visual. I always support my bullet points of content with visual images and diagrams to support the student learning. I also try my best to incorporate micrographs where I can to remind students that science is not just colourful diagrams. For example when I teach mitosis I include micrographs of the. cells showing the students what the cells actually look like when they undergo division My favourite thing about teaching my subject is that I am able to share my passion for the science with the next generation. The sciences are easily misunderstood and that can be disheartening, but I enjoy showing students that they are not scary and complicated, but actually interesting.
