A bit about Liam H

A competent teacher in Biology, qualified with PGCE in June 2011. I hold a 2:1 honours degree in Biological Science and a PhD in Biology as well as many years research experience with several scientific papers published in renowned Journals. I am currently a Biology teacher in a top grammar school and a Head of Year. I am enthusiastic and have motivated students in Biology using a wide range of active learning strategies and ICT in the classroom and online through Virtual Learning Environments. Biology teaching and the use of digital technology. I use a variety of hardware e.g. PC, iPad, Smart Phone and Data Loggers along with multiple software everyday to improve and extend pupils learning and ensure it is accessible to all. I keep up to date with technological and digital advances to ensure that I can adapt my use of digital technology based on its usefulness and understand its limitations. With in-school learning I often employ the well proven strategy of ‘gamification’. There are several platforms I use for this, including ‘Kahoot’, ‘Socrative’, ‘Quizziz’ and more recently ‘Blooket’. During lockdown I used ‘Zoom’ for live lessons/Q&A sessions as well as recording lessons accompanied by video commentary using ‘Flashback Pro’. To keep my videos varied and interesting I used a range of production tools and creative software such as ‘Keynote’, ‘Pages’, ‘Numbers’, ‘iMovie’ and ‘Canva’. I collaborated and communicated with pupils using ‘Google Classroom’ and ‘Moodle’. My philosophy of education is that all young people are unique and must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. It is my desire to create this type of atmosphere where students can meet their full potential. I will provide a safe environment where students are invited to share their ideas and take risks. I believe that there are four essential elements that are conducive to learning. (1) The teacher's role is to act as a guide. (2) Students must have access to hands-on stimulating resources. (3) Students should be able to have choices and let their curiosity direct their learning. (4) Students need the opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment. A love of working with young people and a love of Biology! Biology is amazing, it is life, it is everything. Understandably, that is not always the way students see it and I think it is part of a Biology teacher’s job to bring it to life for them as much as possible. Biology allows us to grasp the incredible world around us — and how were connected to it. It tells us all about plants and animals – how they live, what they’re made up of, and how they interact with mankind and each other. This enables us to make the most of our planet’s natural resources while trying to minimize the impact we have on the environment.” From a societal perspective, an understanding of biology helps the human population continue to thrive. For example, understanding ecology helps us properly manage resources so that we can balance both the needs of nature and our own. This helps ensure we don’t deplete resources and they continue to be available for generations to come. Whether changing our relationship with the ocean to protect marine life or growing batteries from bacteria, biology allows us to make the connection between science and all living things. BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences PhD in Biology PGCSE Music, movies, gaming, playing guitar, dogs, swimming and raising a 2 year old and a 4 year old!
