A bit about John S

At A-Level, I specialised in pure maths and mechanics modules. At university, I specialised in applied mathematics, including mathematical methods, mechanics, relativity, applied probability, complex calculus, variational calculus, and fluid dynamics. In my masters degree, I specialised heavily in fluid dynamics, particularly low Reynolds number fluid dynamics. My Masters essay was on Modelling the Hook Mechanics of a Swimming Uniflagellar Bacterium. My teaching style focuses on understanding. Whether students can answer exam questions with ease, or really struggle with a topic, they often lack true understanding of a topic. This can lead to struggles later on, such as difficulty answering niche exam questions which come up every year, difficulty understanding more advanced topics in further study, or quickly forgetting what has been learned. I like to make sure my students really understand what it is they are trying to do. I have a Master of Mathematics (MMath) degree from the University of Cambridge, achieving an Honours Pass with Distinction. I also have a BA in mathematics from the University of Cambridge. I have A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science, all at A*, and have 10 A*s at GCSE. I also hold various awards such as the DUX award and CREST Gold award. The first student I ever tutored started at a Grade 4 in her GCSE maths. After just a year of tutoring, she had gone up to a Grade 8! She is now in her final year at the University of Nottingham.
