A bit about Michael R

I am a good communicator, both one on one and in larger groups. Initially this was learned in a sales environment, but after obtaining a Masters degree in art and design history, I started teaching in higher education after 2001. Since then I have also written several books and in 2010 became a qualified London Blue Badge tourist guide, enabling me to further share my passion for history and culture with others. While I specialise in art and design history the discipline has enabled me to explore British and European social history at the highest level too. My extensive knowledge has facilitated the authorship of several books on art and design history, as well as one on the history of London. The teaching of history is achieved by setting up a dialogue (both written and verbal) around the historical facts, encouraging students to debate the outcomes of a particular event in a constructive manner, thus enriching their own understanding of its narratives. My teaching style is to introduce one aspect of that history that demands an immediate interaction with a student. To achieve this I adopt an informal and affable approach to learning, that equally pays due deference to the subject matter. I begin the teaching process by listening to the student to best understand how they approach learning, and to develop a rapport. Using that information I will structure a program that best helps them achieve their desired outcomes at each stage. I consider that interaction with students and how they absorb the information you are trying to impart, is as important as the information itself. I have a first class degree (BA Hons) and a Master's degree (by research) both from Kingston University. I also have a Postgraduate certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, also from Kingston University, and am a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.
