A bit about Lilly L

I am an enthusiastic and exciting Primary teacher and tutor with over 10 years of experience, both in the UK and internationally. If you are feeling lost or confused in class, I can make learning clear, engaging and accessible. Let's fall in love with learning again! My lessons usually start with retrieval practice so we can access our prior knowledge to build on within a session. I then use an exciting hook to introduce the learning objective for the lesson. After modelling and guided practice as well as constructive discussion, my pupils have the opportunity to apply what they have learnt in context. I finish my lessons with either a quiz, a game or a review as well as built in time for self-reflection and next steps. I started working with children in 2007 as a teenager myself! I undertook a teaching degree from 2010-2013 and achieved first class honours and was graded 'an outstanding teacher' by my university and Ofsted. I have worked in classrooms ever since and tutored Year 6 pupils towards their SATs. I started my online teaching in early 2020 during the first wave of the pandemic. I love that it gives me the opportunity to interact with children around the globe every day. In English sessions, I develop a love of reading for both pleasure and information through engaging discussions using a wide vocabulary. I integrate an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for creative writing and spoken language. I teach my students to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audience. I believe everything can be broken down into small, manageable steps. In maths sessions, I teach my pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Many Primary pupils struggle to explain how they arrived at an answer: I teach my pupils to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. My degree is in Primary Teaching with a Science specialism and I have experience teaching KS3 Biology. With my pupils, I develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. I love the great outdoors; nature; learning about people and their cultures and sometimes I even get called 'The Bug Lady!' as I love insects! I am an advanced PADI diver, a skydiver, skiier and I have certification in flying small aircraft and gliders. My pupils always make good progress but I make sure we have fun along the way too. I like to find out my pupil's interests and I incorporate lots of different learning styles into my teaching. I specialise in Primary but I have taught Early Years and Secondary too. I was Head of Primary for 3 years and I have spent time as a supply teacher, so I know how to pitch lessons to all ages. I am not sure I could choose between teaching phonics to Year 1 or long division to Year 6...let's do both!
