An experienced online tutor, I teach KS3 English, GCSE English Language & Literature, GCSE history, and also tutor students preparing for their 11+ entrance exams. Books and learning are my passion, and I read anything I can lay my hands on: literature, history, travel, science, philosophy... To date, my GSCE students have improved their grades by at least 2, in some cases 3, grades within a 6 week to 4 month period of tutoring. I have a BA Hons degree in History from Bristol University, and A-Level's in English Literature, History & Psychology, hold a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and am currently studying for a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Teaching. I hold a full enhanced DBS and have taken several safeguarding courses.
My lessons always start with a 5 minute chat about the week, what's been happening, anything interesting or funny. I have a list of questions and debate topics which I sometimes introduce, as this improves confidence, trust and communication, and these can be quite thought provoking! Lessons are all individually tailored to the needs of the student, so I will focus on the areas they feel they need most support with. Key skills such as comprehension, analytics, evaluation and critical reasoning are included in all lessons, and there will often be a broader learning element to include context and perspective. I like to focus on logic and critical reasoning, as these underpin every subject, every element of learning and understanding.
Friendly, relaxed, enthusiastic, engaging. I like my lessons to be interactive, discursive and relevant. I don't have a formal teaching background, therefore I can approach subjects with a different perspective, whilst understanding the fundamental concepts that students require, such as the ability to comprehend and infer information, to be able to analyse and question, to be logical, and above all to be able to communicate. I aim to use interactive approaches and include discussion and reasoning, introducing multi-subject material such as history, philosophy, and psychology into English lessons, or current affairs and sociology into psychology lessons for context and a wider perspective. Helping students to gain self-confidence in their own abilities is always a key aim. So many students start tutoring with low expectations of their own ability, and it is highly rewarding to see this change.
That I actively listen to them, focus on them and treat them all with respect as individuals, and never talk down or patronise. They know they can ask any question, and we can pause to discuss it, or research it and that the lesson is about their needs and their progress - and that their progress matters to me.
Mostly AQA, although I do have experience of Edexcel. My students range from KS2 (11+ entrance exams), KS3, GSCE and A-Level and GCSE English Language re-sits.

This lesson was very helpful for me, I can’t wait to work with Sally again.
Can't recommend Sally enough. My son had series of classes that were focusing on correcting the way he expresses himself and generally better verbalisation for upcoming 11+. Since he struggled with slowing down his thinking process and concentration, Sally's approach was just the perfect fit. I love how thoughtful and tailored the classes were, resulting both with more focus from my son's side and his mock test marks. Thank You so much Sally!
Sally is an amazing tutor who guided me from a 4 to a 7 in the matter of two months!! My journey with her was so rapid and enjoyable. These lessons were one of the things I looked forward to in the busy weeks leading up to my exams. She's honestly amazing. :')
Helped me feel really confident with English Lit and Language, showing and explaining different points and techniques to use in the exams, in my essays and answers. Very nice and sent lots of helpful materials that helped me for my exams.
