Tell us a bit about yourself.

A little introduction; I am an online tutor with over a year's experience and teach primarily on KS3 English and GCSE English Language and Literature. I also tutor students preparing for their 11+ entrance exams in English, creative writing, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. To date, my GSCE and A-Level students have improved their grades by at least 2, in some cases 3 grades, within a 6 week to 4 month period of tutoring. In addition, I tutor A-Level psychology, which never ceases to fascinate, especially when discussing the course material with students, and how they perceive it as relating to themselves, and their wider environment. I have a 2:1 BA Hons degree in History from Bristol University, and A-Level's in English Literature, history & psychology, fully TEFL qualified and hold a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I hold a full enhanced DBS and have taken several safeguarding courses.

How do your lessons usually plan out?

My lessons always start with a 5 minute chat about the week, what's been happening, anything interesting or funny. I have a list of questions and debate topics which I sometimes introduce, as this improves confidence, trust and communication, and these can be quite thought provoking! Lessons are all individually tailored to the needs of the student, so I will focus on the areas they feel they need most support with. Key skills such as comprehension, analytics, evaluation and critical reasoning are included in all lessons, and there will often be a broader learning element to include context and perspective. I like to focus on logic and critical reasoning, as these underpin every subject, every element of learning and understanding.

What is your teaching style?

Friendly, relaxed, enthusiastic, engaging. I like my lessons to be interactive, discursive and relevant. I don't have a formal teaching background, therefore I can approach subjects with a different perspective, whilst understanding the fundamental concepts that students require, such as the ability to comprehend and infer information, to be able to analyse and question, to be logical, and above all to be able to communicate. I aim to use interactive approaches and include discussion and reasoning, introducing multi-subject material such as history, philosophy, and psychology into English lessons, or current affairs and sociology into psychology lessons for context and a wider perspective. Helping students to gain self-confidence in their own abilities is always a key aim. So many students start tutoring with low expectations of their own ability, and it is highly rewarding to see this change.

What do students love most about your teaching style?

That I actively listen to them, focus on them and treat them all with respect as individuals, and never talk down or patronise. They know they can ask any question, and we can pause to discuss it, or research it and that the lesson is about their needs and their progress - and that their progress matters to me.

What exam boards and year groups do you teach?

Mostly AQA, although I do have experience of Edexcel. My students range from KS2 (11+ entrance exams), KS3, GSCE and A-Level and GCSE English Language re-sits.
