A bit about Sally

I'm a friendly and experienced online tutor, teaching GCSE English Language & Literature, GCSE History, KS3 English and History, and English-related aspects of 11+ and 13+ exams for over 3 years. I also have extensive experience of working with home-schooled students. To date, my GSCE students have improved their grades by at least 2, in some cases 4, grades within a 6-week to 6-month period of tutoring as well as increasing their self-confidence and understanding of the subject matter. I tutor AQA, Edexcel, OCR and CCEA exam boards and use material tailored to each specific curriculum. In addition to educational qualifications, I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and have taught students with ADHD, dyslexia, and Tourettes, as well as home-schooled students and intervention students who are studying outside of mainstream education. I hold a full enhanced DBS and have taken several safeguarding courses. Books and learning are my passion, and I read anything I can lay my hands on - literature, history, travel, science, philosophy... My lessons always start with a 5-minute chat about the week, what's been happening, and anything interesting or funny. I have a list of questions and debate topics which I sometimes introduce, as this improves confidence, trust, and communication, and these questions can be quite thought-provoking! Lessons are all individually tailored to the needs of the student, so I will focus on the areas they feel they need the most support. Key skills such as comprehension, analytics, evaluation, and critical reasoning are included in all lessons, and there will often be a broader learning element to include context and perspective. I like to focus on logic and critical reasoning, as these underpin every subject, every element of learning and understanding. Friendly, relaxed, enthusiastic, and engaging. I like my lessons to be interactive, discursive, and relevant. I don't have a formal teaching background, therefore I can approach subjects with a different perspective, whilst understanding the fundamental concepts that students require, such as the ability to comprehend and infer information, be able to analyse and question, be logical, and above all to be able to communicate. I aim to use interactive approaches and include discussion and reasoning, introducing multi-subject material such as history, philosophy, and psychology into English lessons, or current affairs and sociology into psychology lessons for context and a wider perspective. Helping students to gain self-confidence in their own abilities is always a key aim. So many students start tutoring with low expectations of their own ability, and it is highly rewarding to see this change. That I actively listen to them, focus on them and treat them all with respect as individuals, and never talk down or patronise. They know they can ask any question, and we can pause to discuss it, or research it, and that the lesson is about their needs and their progress - and that their progress matters to me. AQA, Edexcel, CCEA & OCR My students range from KS2 (11+ entrance exams), KS3, GSCE English Literature, Language & History, and GCSE English Language re-sits.
