A bit about Nick L

I am a fully qualified secondary maths teacher with over a decades experience of teaching KS3 and GCSE maths and 8 years experience of working as a GCSE examiner for Edexcel and AQA. I have a PGCE in Secondary Maths and in 2019 I was recognised by the Joint Council for Qualifications for my services to mathematics examining, meaning I understand mark schemes and how answers need to be structured. I have tutored A Level Maths and Further Maths but specialise in GCSE maths tutoring due to my in-depth understanding of the exams. My plan for any students sitting GCSEs or IGCSEs in Summer 2022 would be to first work through the topics laid out in the 'Additional Information' guidance recently released by the government as a support mechanism to those whose education has unfortunately been hindered by the pandemic. I’m a 35 year old father of three. I have taught up to A-Level Further Maths and IB Higher Level (teaching the Stats option) but I specialise in GCSE teaching. My approach, similar to spaced repetition, of regularly reminding students of topics we have covered previously and referring back to them, seems to help students at this level avoid the phenomenon of understanding a topic and then completely forgetting it within a short timeframe. Quick revision exercise on previous topics covered to ensure effective cyclic learning, followed by the teaching of a new topic and an intense focus on exam technique including a reference to the mark scheme and what examiners are trained to look for. Towards the end I will seek to present questions which link new topics with previously learnt material, preparing them better for the 'exam style' questions they can expect to face. 2008 There is usually a single correct answer, and seeing a students satisfaction when they arrive at the right solution is always enjoyable. I find that with maths, there are a lot of students out there who end up surprising themselves with the potential they actually have as they progress from the basics and a strong foundation, to the linking of topics and ability to problem solve.
