A bit about Obeng D

For over 20 years I have been teaching in the UK from SEN to primary and secondary. My subject areas include Maths, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) up to GCSE and English as a second language. I have also thought and prepared 7+, 11+ and 13+ pupils for various entries and scholarships. I have an excellent track record for maintaining a high standards in teaching, based on my understanding of the uniqueness of each learner, and how to enable them to make progress. I specialise in teaching: Mathematics - Primary Key Stages 1 and 2, 7+, 11+, 13+ - Secondary Schools and Colleges up to GCSE Science - Primary Key Stages 1 and 2 - Secondary Schools and Colleges up to GCSE Physics, Chemistry, Biology - Primary Key Stages 1 and 2 - Secondary Schools and Colleges up to GCSE English as Second Language My Teaching Philosophy is based on the fact that: Every learner is unique and different. So before I plan the lesson I do the following: 1. I get to know the learner; 2. I identify areas of strength as well as address barriers to learning; Then, I allow these to inform my planning accordingly and try to accomplish the following: - I make learning accessible and enjoyable; - I measure learning outcomes against my objectives and adapt where necessary I provide constant feedback and praise achievement, thereby enabling the learner build self esteem; 5. I engage Parents or carers in the process, providing feedback where necessary. I started my first tutoring over 10 years ago with Fleet Tutors. Since then I have never left tutoring. Over the years I have delivered in some cases 100 percent A* -B 13+ success. I have been Maths Leader/Teacher at my Prep school in London including 4 scholarships to Westminster Boys at one sitting. I really enjoy tuition, and derive great accomplishment in seeing my tutees make good progress and succeed in life. The subjects I teach are all core subjects. Maths - I love teaching maths because it is STEM-related. Students need solid math skills as they head to the future. Math students learn pattern-seeking and logical thinking. These skills can be used in every job out there. Employers know that not every employee is going to come with subject matter expertise, but they do expect that people can think critically and learn quickly. Math educations builds these very skills. Science - Science, technology, engineering and math careers are growing quickly. In effect, together with maths they provides a great opportunity for jobs in the future, and the foundations for a great society. I am a greater blender of styles, because I believe they all have their place in learning. In effect sometimes: I employ 'The Authority Style' - when it comes to demonstration of good knowledge, understanding and application of the subject matter. For example, the textbook knowledge of Biology, without their application and real life examples may not help the student. I employ 'The Delegator Style' - because I believe that learners need to be trusted for some level of independence and responsibility I adopt 'The Facilitator Style'- again learners need to be trusted for some level of independence and responsibility I become 'The Demonstrator' - to engage learners that my be visual or kinaesthetic Every child is unique as well as different. So: 1. I get to know the learner first; 2. I work towards identifying areas of strength as well as address barriers to learning; 3. I make learning accessible and enjoyable; 4 I praise achievement, thereby enabling the learner build self esteem; 5. I engage parents or carers in the process, providing feedback and addressing their queries where necessary. My students are what keeps me going about teaching. I love interacting with them, I learn from them, and also enable them to succeed, I love helping them understand the content of any course and I love when they see the connection between what they are learning and their lives. There is nothing more fulfilling than helping a young person build a future through education.
