A bit about Dr Emma C-S

I have a real passion for chemistry and this helped me to obtain a first class master’s degree in Chemistry. I also gained a PhD in organometallic chemistry from the University of Bristol in collaboration with BP Chemicals. During my time at the University of Bristol, I gained valuable experience tutoring undergraduate students. After my PhD, I worked for the largest chemical company in the world, BASF in Heidelberg, Germany. Whilst I was there, I conducted voluntary tutorials sessions for my work colleagues, which I enjoyed and led me to change my career direction towards teaching. Having experience working in an industrial setting has allowed me to link science topics to real life situations. I feel it is important for students to understand how the science they are learning relates to the real world. I have taught for over 13 years in secondary schools, a private school and a sixth form college. During my time teaching at secondary school, I taught science to KS3 - KS5, and I spent 8 years teaching A level Chemistry at a very large college. I have taught A level Chemistry to OCR A and B and Edexcel exam board specifications, and I am currently an A level examiner for the OCR examining board and for the Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry examining board. I have been responsible for designing schemes of work and written many examination papers. I enjoyed being responsible for the Chemistry society and preparing students for Medical/Oxbridge interviews. The college where I taught entered many students into the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge where many of my previous students have received ‘Gold’ awards. Alongside my normal teaching duties, I have carried out one-to-one sessions with my students, and I have run workshops to help aid understanding and for revision purposes. I also taught pupils online who received the government grant for additional support through lost learning over the lockdown period. I love tutoring as it allows me to really know the student. Working on a one to one basis allows me to see how they approach the work, the methods they use to develop their ideas and answer the questions. I find it amazing to see students grow in confidence and start to enjoy chemistry again. In my spare time I love to keep active where I am serious about weight training. I really enjoy the challenges and competitiveness of getting stronger alongside the relaxing nature of practising pilates. My students have always commented on how approachable I am. The main feedback I receive is that they feel secure and confident in my presence and they are not afraid to ask for help or to make mistakes in front of me. I plan my lessons around the needs and learning styles of the students to enable them to reach their goals. I feel practising examination questions and recall work is very important. As an examiner, I can help the student to understand how marks are attributed for each examination question and to help the student to identify common mistakes in the methods and approaches that they use.
