A bit about Sylvia B

I have taught in mainstream schools for over 25 years and now tutor online. During my time in schools, I have taught all abilities from SEN through to gifted and talented. The schools I have worked in have always had a high level of EAL and I am a qualified TEFL and TESOL instructor. Recently I qualified as a Reading Simplified Tutor which means I have taken advanced phonics training. I specialise in teaching English as an additional language. Many children whose first language is not English struggle in school exams because they do not have academic language. Newcomers to English are often learning basic English while others are learning academic language. I also specialise in all aspects of English and Maths at the primary level. All lessons involve a catch-up on the week and anything exciting that they may have coming up. Homework, where it has been set, is reviewed. Following this, we will discuss and practice the skill or skills that are the objective for the week. How these skills are practiced depends on what they are but games are usually involved as well as the application of the skill. I first started tutoring two years ago alongside part-time teaching. Over the first year, as the tutoring increased the time in a mainstream class was decreased. Online tutoring became a necessity during the first lockdown and I have continued with it as it protects both myself and the tutees. I find tutoring online does not lower the value of what is taught during the sessions. What I love most about being a tutor is seeing the difference 1 2 1 tutoring makes and knowing that the child has made a massive step towards their future.
