A bit about Joseph O

Welcome to my profile. I'm a computer science student at the University of Leicester, currently working at a 1st class. My degree involves a lot of maths which I enjoy. I have been tutoring for 2 years now and have over 150+ hours of tutoring experience ( Which has taken place on other tutoring platforms). I have lots of knowledge of the curriculum, I have personally studied for this exam and I have over many hours of experience tutoring GCSE and primary level students. I am confident that I have enough knowledge to help my students achieve their desired grades. I know how to boost students grades and understand what areas they need to work on to get there. I think tutoring is such an important and powerful tool that can aid in the enhancement of a student's learning. I have tutored on platforms that helped me develop my communication skills and confidence in delivering the topics at GCSE level and below. As a computer science student, I specialise in programming and Mathematics both GCSE and primary level. Firstly, I need to understand exactly what areas my students are struggling with, I create a list of those topics and start from there. In my lessons, I always start with a list of starter questions to help get my students thinking, those questions relate to the current topic being taught or the previous lesson giving me a better understanding of how best to approach my teaching for that lesson. While teaching, I engage my students and ask them questions to get them thinking, this can involve talking through problems and asking questions to check if they understand the concept. After teaching the topic, we will go through a set of questions. These are questions that I have chosen to test different areas of the concepts for the lesson. We will then discuss how they came to their solution enabling me to understand any mistakes they may be making or flaws in their understanding of the topics. At the end of my sessions, I like to give out 3 questions mainly on areas I identified as weaknesses, This might not be an area my student doesn't understand but might be an area they just need more work on. This is usually their homework, which isn't compulsory but is essential to their learning. Lastly, have fun. I want all of my students to enjoy this subject and my sessions. I have been tutoring for just over 2 years now. I started during the second year of my Alevel studies. The joy on my student's faces when they grasp a really difficult concept. I can see their self-belief grow. It's amazing. Outside of teaching, I really enjoy sports mainly basketball, football and tennis. As a computer science student, I occasionally work on programming projects in my spare time such as building games, web apps and fun and exciting things. I run my own podcast which is a fun little side project and I'm a cinephile that enjoys all genre's even classical films. The greatest success I have had during teaching was a student I taught when I first started teaching maths. He was in year 11 and had zero confidence in his abilities. He was working at a 3 and wanted to get to a 5. He worked with me for a whole year and seeing him grow from a student with low confidence to a student capable of solving really difficult problems was a joy. He achieved a 6 and wanted to study maths for his A-levels. The truth was he always had the ability it was just a joy to help him discover it.
