A bit about Karolyn O

I am a PGCE Primary student with KS1 and KS2 experience. Outside of my training, I have 4 years of teaching experience in dance, theatre, and foundation subject tutoring which I did alongside my undergraduate degree. Though my degree was in Biological Anthropology, I have a solid grasp of any subject through focus on the National Curriculum and my own PGCE training. In my spare time I enjoy creative writing, spending time with my dog and playing the Sims. My teaching style is very positive and encouraging. I'm exceptionally patient and I am able to scaffold my assistance, meaning that I provide a gentle nudge in the right direction, assessing whether or not to help the pupil. I try not to give answers straight out, because the importance is learning and understanding the how and why. For example, in a maths lesson, we may be doing the problem: 13+7. While the child may get the answer easily, the answer itself isn't always the most important part. I ask, what strategies did you use (after providing multiple examples of different strategies such as number lines, numicons, base10s, etc.) and how do you know? It provides deeper and more critical thinking because it considers the processes. From there, a child is able to apply that to other problems, in maths or in a different subject. I come from a family of teachers in America, so I was always surrounded by them. My aunt taught English in Japan for 2 years, my grandmother was a 1st Grade (equivalent Y2) teacher, my mother teaches high school alternative education, my uncle is a university professor and my grandfather teaches computer science as a volunteer. I'm familiar with the highs and lows of teaching, and after my own experience as a dance teacher of ages 2-16, I knew that teaching is what I'm meant to do. I enjoy working with children and helping teach the next generation of bright minds. It's inspiring and I have so much fun when I teach because children are so creative and funny, and I love challenging them to be the best they can be.
