A bit about Helena M

An engaging and inspiring KS3, GCSE and A-Level English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin tutor. Highly experienced language teacher with a decade of experience teaching students from a range of backgrounds and cultures, with a variety of learning styles. My goal is to encourage my students to overcome those obstacles that can discourage people from learning a language. I pride myself on building rapport with my students to understand where they are at in the learning process and, using personalised resources to bring out their full potential . Giving detailed and constructive student centred feedback that will help students understand both their strengths and areas to develop is key in a successful lesson. Having experience successfully teaching exam classes for the last 10 years, I have an excellent awareness into the skills needed for success in the WJEC, EDEXCEL and AQA syllabi and have a good understanding of further exam boards. I first started tutoring when living in Mexico in 2008. Since then I have lived abroad in many different countries offering private tuition and working in a range of language schools. I was lucky to study at and gain my PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages in 2014 at the University of Nottingham. This gave me a wealth of insights into the world of teaching and motivated me to focus on ESL teaching in particular as in 2016 I completed my CELTA course in the UK and have been working both online and in brick and mortar schools ever since. In addition to my teaching experience, my role as Academic Coordinator plus working as a translator in a variety of languages have enriched my classroom practice, language knowledge and have had a positive impact upon working with others. I have also taken an active role in staff training and development; and content and blog writing on the subject of ESL and teaching in the online classroom. I love languages and want to share my passion with others and pass this on to all generations. I love that it is never too late to learn a language. I also love creating new and exciting content for students and experimenting with teaching strategies in the online classroom. I enjoy seeing students progress and gain confidence and I especially love hearing their stories of how they were able to use the skills in everyday situations when travelling at home or abroad. I teach with a student centred style. I make sure to reduce my teacher talk time as much as possible and use a variety of extension questions to encourage student production in the classroom. I want to students to feel comfortable when asking questions and to enjoy learning from their mistakes. I also thrive to create an inclusive classroom environment giving equal opportunities to all and a comfortable space to share. My favourite part about being a tutor is having the ability to know that you are impacting people around the globe/country from your living room. Tutoring is extremely rewarding and I have seen first hand the success stories of my students. Every student is different and that is also what makes this career so rewarding. Students love that they are able to be themselves in my lessons, feel comfortable and confident to speak even though they may make mistakes. Students love my creativity and variety of feedback that I give in my classes. I try to adapt my feedback strategies to each individual student so they can have the optimal classroom experience. My greatest success story was tutoring a lovely student from Brazil. He started with barely any English at all and shared about his struggles in finding a job. Fast forward two years later and he is now a successful businessman in an international company. He still updates me on how he is going from success to success thanks to his English classes. This is a wonderful experience I will never forget. I love music and enjoy playing the guitar and the cornet most days. In addition, I enjoy reading a range of books in a variety of languages and also painting in my spare time. My family and I also spend a lot of time foraging and learning about plants and flowers, we do this at home and abroad.
