A bit about Nikoletta

I have recently finished my PhD in Mathematics, studying boundary value problems and partial differential equations. I teach Mathematics at A-level and Degree level. I have been tutoring several topics at university level for the past 4 years, and specialise majorly in pure mathematics courses. I am very interested in public engagement, and have always enjoyed sharing my love for maths through activities of various kinds. I often use a lot of these activities and techniques during my classes, which have proved very popular with students so far. If you have any queries do not hesitate to get in touch! I specialise in pure mathematics, and more specifically mathematical analysis. The topics I was mostly studying and tutoring during my PhD involve Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Calculus, Complex and Real Analysis, Topology, and Singular Analysis. I have also participated in projects of applied mathematical nature, which involved studying mechanics problems and mathematical modelling. Perhaps the most important thing I have learned in my time as an undergraduate and PhD student has been to develop efficient studying techniques, which I aim to help my students develop as well. My lessons usually plan out by answering the question: How does this subject fit into what we know already, and why is it useful or important that we learn this? The planning heavily depends on the subject and the student(s) but as a guideline I first try to emphasise and get across the general idea of the topic, and then continue with the technical aspects, explaining why they are necessary. I started tutoring in the first year of my PhD (2014), where I was tutoring undergraduate or master's students. As an undergraduate I also participated in a lot of Masterclasses, which involved tutoring young teenagers. The thing that I love most about teaching my subject is the fact that I can share with other people the beauty I see in maths. Like most people, I have had some very poor experiences with maths teachers. I was lucky enough to have some more pleasant experiences later on that let me see how wonderful this topic is, and I hope I can be that change for others. My teaching style is very informal, and is very dependent on the student's needs and strengths. I mostly try to teach ideas by explaining maths through everyday life examples and experiences. This then makes teaching the technical parts a lot lighter, as they are motivated and demystified. I work with the student to learn topics in a way that suits them, and emphasize the gravity of what we are learning. I also try to show ways in which the topic is interesting, and if possible, how it applies to the world outside of maths. I take a very student-centred approach, and use the student's personality and background to find the most efficient way of learning. I love listening to and playing music, mostly guitar and drums. I am also very interested in martial arts.
