A bit about Trina E

Fun fact: I have taught in three different countries and can speak three different languages. Can you guess which three countries and which three languages? I specialise in teaching English at secondary school level. i.e. KS3, KS4, and KS5 (Year 7 to 13). This specialism includes teaching reading skills, writing skills, and exam skills. My lessons are mapped to the needs of my students. However, there are routines that I like to use often to make sure that my students know how well they have progressed. The lesson will start with clear objectives and an explanation of what we are going to do together to achieve them. There will be at least three activities and clear feedback after each activity. At the end of the lesson, I like to set a short self-study activity for my student to do so that learning is consolidated. We look at this self-study activity at the start of the next lesson to make sure that the student feels confident with their new knowledge or skill. I started tutoring 22 years ago! But, I have been tutoring online for 2 years. I'm enjoying this new, virtual world! What do I love most about teaching my subject? This is a tough question because I love every aspect of teaching English. English is about expression through the art of words and it gives me great satisfaction to help students become accomplished readers and writers. My students tell me that my teaching style is very clear. I enjoy engaging students so that they participate in our sessions and feel confident to ask questions to gain further explanations. This means that we both know what we are doing and what we are aiming to achieve. I like my students to feel satisfied that, by the end of the session, they have gained the knowledge and skill that was the objective of the session. My favourite thing about being a tutor is when my student 'gets it'. That lightbulb moment is very exciting. My teaching philosophy is summed up in an old Chinese proverb: “Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand.” I want to make sure that my students are involved and develop true understanding when studying English. I have a degree in English, qualification as a teacher, a fellows membership status in the Chartered College of Teachers, and a certificate in teaching English as a foreign language. My love of the English language, and the way it can create meaning, inspired me to become a teacher. It's a joy to help students access meaning and create literature for themselves.
