An experienced English specialist teacher who loves literature!
You can book a free 20 minute, no-commitment introduction with any of our tutors. How does this work?
I have always been extremely passionate about the English language and English literature. Having achieved A*s and As in these subjects, throughout my primary and secondary education, I studied English literature with the Open University and was awarded a First Class Honours Degree. I then went on to complete a Graduate Teacher Programme in Primary Education. I have worked in both the state and independent sectors and have spent the last five years teaching English as a specialism, to Key Stages 2 and 3, using the ISEB curriculum.
I have taught large groups of children, upwards of thirty, in the state sector. In my recent job at a small independent school, some of my lessons were taught to a small handful of pupils, with numbers as low as three for one particular class. Having this breadth of experience has demonstrated to me the importance of individual provision for younger children. Supporting on a 1:1 basis, or even in small groups, can make all the difference.
I believe that a robust knowledge of spelling and grammar, a broad vocabulary, along with both the creative and technical skills needed to respond to comprehension questions and produce good quality creative writing, are the backbones of the English curriculum and I will be happy to focus on particular areas which prove challenging for your child.
Aside from the formal requirements of the English curriculum, there is a great deal of joy to be found in the pages of a good book! I aim to increase the level of understanding and appreciation for good literature in all children. My hope is that the joy of reading will remain with them, beyond formal exams and assessments, and enrich their experience of life into adulthood and beyond.
