A bit about Niraj D

I graduated in English Literature from Leicester and York Universities back in 2011, and have been tutoring on and off since 2012, working with organisations based in North Manchester and now currently in London, as well as personal 1:1 sessions. I always aim to tailor my lessons to suit my students needs, working at their pace and to their strengths, while also challenging them to go further and achieve their best. I am a very understanding and patient tutor who works to your child's pace. I use a wide range of materials, keeping with the guidelines around current curriculums and syllabuses, to make sure lessons are entertaining and inspiring and you walk away knowing more! I specialise in KS3 through to GCSE level English. I'm well versed in the KS3 and GCSE syllabus for AQA, which most students study, and make sure all my lessons are based around the main areas they emphasise. KS3 is the preparation stage for all the skills and abilities students will be tested on at GCSE level, so it's really important to get those foundations right! At GCSE, I help to brush up the key skills students should be familiar with from KS3, and we see how these can be applied to exam questions. Recently, with some of my students, these are the kinds of areas we've covered in lessons: C19th literature, examining 'Great Expectations' and other extracts from Dickens, looking at unseen poetry and tips on how to write a great comparative essay, writing to describe and write imaginatively, understanding the crucial differences between fact and opinion in articles and non fiction texts. I'm also a CELTA qualified EFL teacher, with 6 years experience under my belt. I have in depth knowledge of the requirements across the CEFR spectrum, A1-C2 levels, as well as experience teaching other English language teaching systems, such as the Callan Method and Avalon Quantum English. For me, the key to getting better in any subject (and anything in life!) is CONFIDENCE - and my favourite personal moments have been seeing students who previously felt unsure or confused by the materials gain confidence in tackling them through my lessons. I enjoy seeing students becoming enthusiastic and able to engage well with novels, plays and poems that before they might have found confusing. When I see that lightbulb moment going off in a student's mind, I know I've achieved my goal! I graduated in English Literature back in 2010 (University of Leicester, BA English [EU], 2.1) and read towards a Masters (was not completed, due to personal circumstances at the time) in 2011. I took a NCFE accredited course in 2014 in Understanding the Essentials of Key Stage Teaching. I am also a CELTA qualified EFL teacher (Full time course, Manchester Central School of English, graduated Dec 2014) and worked in this area as my main job for many years. Lots of things! I have many fingers in many pies. I have worked as a radio presenter for commercial radio, working with some big names, so I've always been keen to bring my love for media into my English lessons. I'm an amateur musician too, writing songs and playing piano in a few bands. Other hobbies of mine include reading, writing, going for concerts and trying to do more adventurous cooking! The variety of it all - short and simple! One moment you're looking at a poem, the next at a scene from Shakespeare - the two are hugely and vastly different, and yet you can make so many connections, references, juxtapositions etc between the two. It's a truly fascinating subject. English is a subject that incorporates so many aspects of our life and will help you to make sense of the world around you.
