A bit about Joseph B

With a background in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics it is perhaps unsurprising that my main specialisms are pure mathematics and mechanics, though I've taught up to A-Level and Advanced Higher in both mathematics and physics. I've also examined mathematics at A-Level for over 10 years and more recently Scottish Higher in both maths and physics. Everything in maths is logical. Everything in maths fits together with everything else. I like helping my students make those connections and see the big picture, not just the procedures for dealing with one type of problem or another. I like it when my students leave more confident about their mathematical skills than when they arrived. For me the key aspect of my teaching is questions. I expect to ask a lot of questions, and I expect students to ask me a lot of questions. What I like best is when students will stop me halfway through a bit of working and say "how did you get from *that* line to *that* line"; I like to feel that we're working together to develop and improve their skills and get the best out of them. I prefer to teach students who are studying for qualifications, so generally Y10 or S3 on up which gives a clear focus and end goal. However if you're younger and are looking for targeted help with a particular topic that's great too. In the past I've taught GCSE maths with EdExcel, A-Level maths with AQA and WJEC, A-Level physics with OCR, and the full suite of SQA mathematics and physics qualifications. Maths is maths, however, so even if you're doing the IBac let me know what you're after and likely I can help. I've also been an examiner for over a decade, variously at GCSE, A-level and SQA Higher, so I can advise from a position of knowledge on exam technique and how to maximise your marks. I graduated from Lancaster University with an MSci in Theoretical Physics with Mathematics, then did my PGCE in Secondary Mathematics at St Martin's College (now University of Cumbria). I like singing, cooking, and tinkering with technology. I try to do no more than two of those at the same time. I grew up in the south of England but now live in the Hebrides. I'm autistic so don't be surprised if I come across as a little... odd. :)
