A bit about Jay M

Experienced sixth form teacher and scientist, specialising in chemistry tuition of undergraduate, A2/AS level, IB, KS4 and KS3 students. Tutored science students for over 14 years. With some students, I tutored them from KS3 up to A levels as they find my techniques engaging, effective in science subjects and transferrable to other subjects. • Helped several students with higher impact statements for their UCAS applications and guided them early enough so that they can build in high-quality work experience or related activities. • Supported science students from KS3 to A levels, improving their results to top grades and enabling AP students to return to full-time participation in schools. • Most of the A level/IB students have progressed into Russell group universities and now pursuing excellent careers. • Able to engage and motivate students by drawing upon my passion for science and innovation following a very successful career as a research and development scientist. Considerable expertise and experience of applied chemistry and analytical techniques in pharmaceutical research in blue-chip companies, Glaxo, Boots Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer. o Enables inclusion of excellent practical techniques, link school science to real-life examples of medicines, health products and associated safety. o Teach novel and effective ways to solve problems related to chromatography, NMR, mass spectrometry, infra-red, titrations and synthetic routes. • Developed a diagnostic tool to quickly identify strengths and areas of development. Able to build on students’ strengths and gain confidence to address areas that need attention. • Enable students to develop understanding, skills and expertise in answering questions that frequently prove challenging. Examples of such topics and challenging concepts include o A/IB levels: periodic table trends, problem-solving, mathematical questions (especially moles related questions), organic chemistry including mechanisms and synthesis, analytical techniques, equilibria and energy. • Qualified teacher, a PGCE in secondary education with distinction. • I am a chartered chemist and a fellow of the Royal Society of chemistry. • I also have a current enhanced DBS. My passion for science led me into a very successful career in pharmaceutical research. I have been very fortunate, having participated in research and development of medicines (examples include antibiotics, pain relief products such as Ibuprofen, anti-virals, treatment of cancers) that are in global use. During this period, I had the privilege to provide work experience opportunities for A level, undergraduate and post-graduate students to participate in and gain hands-on experience in research projects. I led collaborations with universities in UK, Europe, Australia, and China. I received three awards for innovation and team working and I am also a contributing author on four science publications. Whilst pursuing the research career, several parents of friends and family approached me to tutor their children with science and mathematics. After early retirement from the industry, the role of tutoring and teaching increased significantly. Success with these students, their parents, guardians, and schools encouraged me to become a teacher. I am now a qualified teacher having secured a PGCE in secondary education with distinction. I have in-depth expertise in problem-solving which enables me to share a range of techniques with my students. I am keen on ensuring students have access to the smart learning techniques and tools to succeed and enjoy science. The success of my students into careers in medicine, research, technology and academia and their encouragement are key drivers for my motivation to tutor students with a wide range of abilities. I start with a diagnostic that I have designed to reveal the topics that my students find easy or challenging. With further information from the parents/guardians, school reports and students, I start with topics that have the highest priority. Students' confidence can be secured by tackling topics students are comfortable with before addressing highly challenging topics. I ensure that topic learning is interesting, effective, and combined with answering questions. I can frequently link the science to real-life applications which makes the topics relevant and memorable. In time as students master the topics, I ensure that they answer exam-style questions and eventually practice full papers. Practice with papers begins well before formal exams so that students learn and apply effective exam techniques to secure high grades.
