A bit about Sabiha K

Hi! I'm a 20 year old student who is passionate about learning myself as well as helping others learn. I have experience in teaching maths and science for KS3, GCSE and A-level students for various exam boards. I did my A-levels in 2020 in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths and achieved A*A*AA grades. However, due to some personal circumstances I could not attend university at that time and would not have been able to for 2 years. So in order to keep myself engaged in academics I decided to fill these years by doing part-time tutoring for maths and science as well as continuing to challenge myself by doing some more A-level like courses in Physics, Psychology and Graphic Design. I started tutoring as a free-lance tutor in late 2020 for both primary and secondary school students. I primarily teach maths and science but if my student comes to me with any other subjects they are struggling with I am always happy to help as best as I can. I believe that a major part of learning and tutoring is providing the students with a space to learn more about themselves and figuring out what learning styles work best for them. Its about giving them confidence in their abilities and skills and providing them ways in which they can improve their learning. Along with this I as a tutor try to find out ways in which I can explain a topic or a subject to the students in such a way that is in line with their learning styles as every student is unique and so are the ways in which they understand things. I can teach all exam boards for ks3 and level 2(GCSEs) for maths and science. For A-levels I personally did Edexcel Pearson's for Chemistry, maths and further maths, and AQA for Biology. However, I have experience in teaching OCR MUA exam board for A-level maths. I have found that as long as we refer to the subject specification properly, and teach everything according to the spec, the content itself is the same for the majority of it. The first thing in my lessons is learning about the student and what they like. This is very important because I have found that if a student is struggling to engage themselves in a topic, it always helps to link the topic to something they enjoy. I then start with asking the student what they already know about the subject (the most common answer I get is "I don't know??"), but I encourage them to even just say the first word that comes to their minds, just to get them thinking about the topic and this activity actually works really well to provide an anchor to hold on to the information I teach them later on. I do my best to make the lessons as interactive as possible and create a friendly environment where the student feels free to take part in the conversation. At the end every lesson, I always do some exam style questions which help the students understand exam technique. I find that linking different things together is a very good way of learning, especially in science. For example whenever I teach biology, I always talk about how the processes we are learning about are actually happening inside the body or outside in a plant. The idea that our brain is controlling everything in our body but it "refuses" to tell us so we have to learn about it in school, always gets the students very engaged and makes the content more interesting for them. I also try to shift the student's mindset about learning from "I have to learn this because I have a test" to "This is interesting and I want to learn this", as a positive mindset has a very big impact on learning.
