A bit about Julia J

Last year I had great success with all of my GCSE students. With one year 11 student in particular, when we started in September she was predicted a grade 4 in both English Language and English Literature. In our weekly lessons, I gave her detailed feedback for all of her writing practice and helped to guide her through all of the GCSE texts and papers. By the end of the year, her exam results were astounding, she received a grade 8 in English Language and a grade 9 in English Literature, which was the highest grade improvement in her entire school! This was certainly one of my proudest moments as a tutor, especially as alongside this, all of my GCSE students went up by two grades on average, exceeding their initial targets and getting into their intended sixth forms and colleges. With my tutoring for the common entrance exams, last year one of my students who I helped prepare for the 11+ English exam gained a full scholarship to a top private school, going up against hundreds of other applicants, which was also fantastic. All of my students applying for the 11+ and 13+ have gotten into their target schools, including top UK private schools such as Dulwich College and City of London. I'm an English tutor and freelance writer from London. I've been tutoring since the age of 16 so have a wide range of experience as a teacher. Having achieved full marks in my English Literature A level, amongst the highest in the country at the time, I consider myself an expert in school level English. I have a degree in English With Creative Writing from the prestigious University of Nottingham and can offer effective help with a variety of subjects surrounding English. I've tutored small children, helping them learn to read and write and obtain a high level of literacy, whilst I've also taught GCSE & A level students, helping them to achieve the best grades possible. I'm highly experienced tutoring for the English common entrance exams, having guided numerous students with both the 11+ and 13+ exams in recent years. Because of these experiences, I feel I can offer a very wide range of skills as a teacher when it comes to this subject. My passion for English is something I wish to instil in all of my students. The majority of my tutoring experience has been for English Literature GCSE and English Language, and I consider myself to be an expert on all of the exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and IGCSE. I can help guide students through all the different set text such as Macbeth and An Inspector Calls, having studied them extensively myself throughout my tutoring career. I can also offer guidance with general writing skills for any student that struggles with essay writing or creative writing. For the common entrance exams, I've guided multiple students for both the 11+ and the 13+ English exams, marking past papers and helping them to improve their comprehension skills and creative writing skills, as well as helping students prepare for interviews. I've always been really passionate about English Literature and English Language. Analysing texts and discussing novels is my favourite thing to do, so tutoring this subject has been a fantastic job for me as I get to guide students to hopefully love the subject as much as I do! English, even at the GCSE level, has so many fascinating texts and topics so it's always something I find interesting and engaging to teach to others. The poetry module in the GCSE literature exam is a wonderful example of the range and depth of the subject, due to the interesting mix of both classic and contemporary poems. I also love guiding people with creative writing, as this is what I specialised in at university. As an aspiring novelist myself, teaching creative writing is a great way for me to consolidate my own skills as a writer and share some of the tips and tricks I've learned throughout the years. I love seeing my students improve and get more confident throughout our sessions, as often I think all a student who is struggling with English needs is one-on-one feedback for their writing and language analysis abilities, as this can be quite difficult to get in a large classroom at school. Even if a student dislikes a text, I take it upon as a challenge to myself to try and teach it it in a way that will be fun and engaging, hopefully getting them to understand it from a new perspective. GCSE student in particular might dislike studying Shakespeare plays due to the challenging language, so I love guiding them through this as once the difficulty of the language is overcome, they are introduced to a gripping and exciting story which they can truly enjoy as well as learn from.
