A bit about Tony

Hi, my name is Tony, former maths teacher, former psychology teacher, former BBC T.V. studio engineer. (I worked on EastEnders when it started in 1985) Former Club 18-30 rep. I have a degree in electronic engineering (2-2) as well as a degree in psychological science (2-1). To be honest, my memory isn't great! So I know lots of tips and tricks to help with maths up to and including A level. I specialise in Maths up to A level because the only thing I remember from my psychology degree is this... If the human brain was sufficiently simple for us to be able to understand it, we'd be too simple to understand it. I've been tutoring maths for several years now. Covid caused me to move to online tuition and students seem to like it. Hence I find myself writing this, on a fine sunny March afternoon ? I always begin by consulting the world's number one expert on the subject of "Which parts of maths do you most want help with" Often when my student tells me this, they have some example problems that we work through together. If they have no examples I provide them. Then it's a case of working at the level and pace that is right for the individual student. I first tutored twenty years ago if you count my two lovely daughters. What a nightmare that was! (Parents know how tricky it is to tutor our own children) I really started properly about ten years ago after I left teaching to look after my elderly father. Working through problems my student brings to the session. I help the student realise that with a few little prompts in the right places, they can solve the problems. I love it when the penny drops and a student can see how to do all the problems of a particular kind. I love comments such as "Oh, I see now, its just like ..... and that means if I do this... of course that's because.....oh it all seems so easy now." If you cant do a problem, change it to a problem of the same type that you can do. Remind yourself of the process with nice easy numbers, then go back to the one you were struggling with. I let the students have a go, but I help as soon as they get stuck. Also I break down complex procedures into easy-to-understand steps. Students say they like some of the analogies I use to help maths make sense, rather than being a set of procedures that simply have to be applied. Helping students improve their maths grade so that they get into their first choice University. Honors degree (2-2) in Electronic Engineering 1984. Honors degree (2-1) in psychological science 1995. P.G.C.E 2005. Mixed doubles table tennis champion, Butlins, Filey 1977) The Long Holidays! I spent the eighties as hedonistic pleasure-seeker. The nineties as a stand-up comedian. The naughties as a Teacher and the teens looking after my elderly father while Tutoring. These days I like reading, mainly non-fiction. I love trying to understand more about this amazing reality in which we all find ourselves. I am very excited about the future because my wife and I are expecting our first grandchild ( sometime in the next 10-15 years ;-) AQA, EDEXCEL and OCR. For A level maths. AQA EDEXCEL, OCR and EDUQAS for GCSE maths. I have also helped students as young as 10 with their school maths.
