A bit about Sarah L

After graduating from UCL with a bachelors in Biotechnology (I promise there was a lot more Maths in that degree than Science), I went onto becoming a tutor at Mathnasium where I gained over two thousand hours of tutoring experience. After two years, I became Lead Instructor, managing online classrooms. I specialise tutoring students from as young as primary school, all the way up to GCSE, across all exam boards. Many of my students come to me with the mindset that they do not enjoy Maths, mainly because they believe they are not good at it. Such opinions break my heart! My teaching style is nothing magical, but it specialises in building confidence in the student. The common goal is to be able to allow the student to feel comfortable and confident enough to reach an answer - even if it is wrong! Everyone can do Maths and I hope my lessons can achieve that in an enjoyable way. I've had many quote-on-quote "difficult" students in my tutoring career. One student in particular, many tutors avoided due to her lack of focus and tendency to throw tantrums. However, teaching is not just about getting the student to do questions! I wanted to show her she was capable and that we didn't have to do things old school - such as just reading from a textbook. Understanding when she needed breaks, or when I could even take her learning a step further kept me in tune with student's pace. Over two years down the line now, I still tutor her twice a week to see her mature into a lovely young lady. Maths may not be her favourite subject, but she has substantially improved from when I first met her, and it is my great success to witness it. Most of my sessions start with a bit of warm-up; this can be something related to last session or something as fun as a little memory game to get those gears turning! Once the cogs are moving, we can get down nitty gritty! If you are a new student, I usually start with a very casual assessment based on your curriculum to see what you know and where some gaps need filling. It is more for me to get a grasp of your level and shouldn't be anything stressful! Once that's completed, I can then formulate a learning plan where each topic can be tackled per session.
