What is a deficiency disease?

A deficiency disease is a disease caused by a lack of an essential vitamin or mineral ion in the diet. For instance, scurvy is a deficiency disease caused by a lack of vitamin C and leads to symptoms such as bleeding and swollen gums, tooth loss, fatigue and muscle pain.

It is a disease which occurs due to a lack of nutrients, over a prolonged period of time.
