Cystic fibrosis is a recessive genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the CFTR gene, which codes for a protein that is involved in cell membrane function. The digestive and respiratory systems of affected individuals become clogged with thick, sticky mucus due to its over production. Over time this leads to damage of the organs and causes a reduction in life expectancy.
