DNA codes for amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. In the nucleus, DNA is transcribed into mRNA, which leaves through nuclear pores and enters the cytoplasm. In the cytoplasm, mRNA is translated into a polypeptide, which folds into a specific shape and may associate with other polypeptides to form the completed protein.
